  • My Girls

    My Girls

Looking at you, I see wonder, joy, strength

“This piece was directed by the models. The poses that the girls naturally assumed showed their relationship with their dad much better than I could have instructed them. Their father was the anchor — and the girls fluttered around him. I got a sense of how the girls saw him as strong and reassuring. They looked at him with a ‘my dad can do anything’ look. The dad was clearly having fun being with his daughters. I wanted to make this sculpture a two-way piece — the girls look to his strength and stability, and he looks to them as his greatest source of joy. I think the beauty of a good father/daughter relationship is in its duality. I hope the sentiment can be read from either perspective — father to daughters, or daughter to father.”

  • Je t’aime (I love you)

    Je t’aime (I love you)

In any language, it’s you I love

“My daughter lives in France, so I’ve traveled there quite a bit in the last few years. I enjoy the art and architecture, the gorgeous countryside, learning the language… It’s truly a culture of romance. So in sculpting Je t’aime, a piece about love, I wanted it to have a little more style and mystique… a sophistication, an elegance… I made changes to the dress — extending sleeves and neckline. I love the challenge of starting with a solid, opaque, hard surface, and carving and carving until it looks like embellished lace. The extensive surface carving makes Je t’aime unique in the line. Although influenced by France, Je t’aime is a universal piece. The sentiment moves from the universal, to the personal one-on-one. ‘In any language, it’s you I love.'”

  • The Christmas Story Gentle Animals Of The Stable

The Christmas Story Gentle Animals Of The Stable

Susan Lordi sculpted these three animals to specifically fit the larger-scale and presence of The Christmas Story and Sanctuary.

“I wanted these animals to have a calming, yet very stoic, elegant presence — by their gestures, their stance, the turn of their heads. I experimented with color and texture to give them a softness. I was interested in transforming a hard surface by carving and carving into it until it looked wooly or furry, or in the case of the donkey, had the clothlike surface of a blanket.”

  • Quest

    Quest

    Seek, explore, discover

“Quest was inspired by my son, who is currently immersed in the research and documentation of other cultures. The idea of the figure is to portray that time in someone’s life when he finds something that he is passionately interested in — and begins to pursue it, independently, with no parental prodding. He’s ‘into it’. It’s the love of learning for learning’s sake.  Quest represents when a young person (or really, any age person) is motivated by his own interests and goals.

Quest could be a birthday gift or graduation gift, or a thank you gift to a teacher/mentor who may have sparked an interest in a young mind.”

“This is intended as a universal piece of goodwill… her hairstyle and gold-flecked hair band suggest an aura of celebration and specialness. Anniversary

    Love ever endures

“I sculpted this piece using my parents as models. When I asked them to sit down and get comfortable, they just seemed to fit together so perfectly. It was such a self-directed pose, as though they’ve been doing it for years — and they have! They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2011. The carving on the back is a little added discovery …. ‘I love thee’. I like the sound of the word ‘thee’. It feels poetic and intimate to me.”

  • The Christmas Story

    The Christmas Story

Her name is Mary. His name is Joseph. The baby, Jesus

The Christmas Story is the largest-scale nativity created by Susan Lordi. The two figures are approx. 15″ tall, and are best displayed in the Sanctuary.

The expressive gestures of Mary and Joseph reveal their humanity, and portray their overwhelming emotion of love and protection for their newborn child. The two-piece set of Mary holding baby Jesus, and Joseph is the centerpiece of The Christmas Story. The figures are nearly 15” tall, and painted with richly layered colors. The elegant movement of Mary’s and Joseph’s garments, and their protective gestures bring this composition to the highest levels of sculptural art.

The pieces relate to each other when placed on the base of the Sanctuary. Mary is turned in toward Joseph, sheltered by his right arm. Joseph’s staff and cloak form a protective shield around his new family. Joseph’s left hand, positioned above the head of baby Jesus, shadows the curve of Mary’s wrist. This is a historically symbolic gesture of blessing and protection.

“The Christmas Story is a story from the past… but the overwhelming emotions of holding a new baby, starting a new family, and wanting to protect them forevermore are present today in every culture and every age. My hope is that the gestures of Mary and Joseph will represent these powerful feelings of love and protection.”

  • Generations

    Generations

    Making memories that last lifetimes

“I learned to sew from my mother, and she learned from her mother and aunt. I wanted this piece to not only depict the process of learning, sharing and making, but also the creating of memories that are passed down with love through generations. I hope it resonates with anyone who has lovingly carried on any special tradition within her family.”

  • Hero

    Hero

Hero, we honor thee, keeping safe your memory

“I carved this memorial in dedication to those who have suffered a loss in the service of others. I want to quietly honor the courage of the hero who has died, and the everyday courage of the hero who is left. This patriot’s grief is to be honored as well. There are other figures in the marketplace about patriotism and honor, but I wanted to create one that acknowledged personal loss. Hero is a melancholy piece. I see it as very much a memorial. On a very personal level, keeping safe your memory is an intimate promise made to one who is gone … I hope the gesture of her embrace reflects some of these ideas.”

  • Courage

    Courage

Bringing a triumphant spirit, inspiration and courage

“I sculpted the first Angel of Courage in 2001 to celebrate the triumphant spirit, inspiration and courage we call upon to face challenges in our lives — whether they be our health or the well-being of our loved ones.  In response to an overwhelming request for this sentiment, I re-sculpted Courage in 2006. I hope this figure can be a reminder of people in our lives who inspire us with their strength and courage every day.”
