  • Zampognaro (Shepherd with bagpipe)

    Zampognaro (Shepherd with bagpipe)

    A shepherd’s gift… a joyous melody… proclaiming the news!

“I love the idea of bringing music to the Nativity… and I wanted to portray an instrument that’s traditionally been used for that purpose.

“My son is immersed in the preservation of indigenous music in the regions of Italy and Sicily, from where my grandparents immigrated. He’s re-introduced an authentic musical tradition to our family by learning about and playing thezampogna, the Italian bagpipe (pronounced zam-pone-ya).

“The bagpipe is an ancient pastoral instrument played by shepherds and farmers for thousands of years, and is used in many cultures to celebrate the nativity. In present day Italy, the Zampognaro (shepherd with bagpipe) plays the Novena, the nine days leading up to Christmas… a celebration and announcement of the birth of Christ.

“The music is festive and vibrant, accompanied by singing and dancing. It’s a time of reunion and company – heralding the arrival of the holidays. It’s the Italian version of caroling – people gather, singing songs passed down through the generations.

“The zampogna is a humble shepherd’s instrument, yet it produces a rich texture of melody and rhythm. I like the thought of this joyful, symphonic music surrounding the nativity scene.”

  • Shelter for The Holy Family

    Shelter for The Holy Family

This pierced-metal backdrop was created to complement The Holy Family, though it can be used as a beautiful backdrop for other angels or figures as well.

“The repetitive swirling concentric mark-making is suggestive of twinkling stars at night. The roof is an intertwined, organic structure that suggests a bower of twigs or branches. Since the surface patterning is complex with tiny elements, I wanted to pare down the form to the simplest possible. It’s basically a single sheet of pierced metal, curved to allow it to stand and represent a shelter for The Holy Family and animals.”

  • Prayer of Peace

    Prayer of Peace

    Seeking the quiet within

“I wanted this prayer figure to be a humble piece, but very centering, calming, peaceful… with a universal gesture of meditative thought. The surface is carved with texture and patterns of living natural forms. Even though this is a quiet piece, I wanted the imagery to be very alive with movement – to have an inner energy of life.”

  • My sister, my friend

    My sister, my friend

Walk with me. And along the way, we’ll share… everything

“A sister can save your life. A safety net. You never laugh harder than when you’re laughing with your sisters… or very close dear friends. You share the same history;  the inside jokes that no one else would understand in the same way. A sister knows your faults and somehow puts up with them, and loves you in spite of them.

“I have two sisters – one nearby and one farther away. When I’m with either one, or both, the walks we take and the talks we have are like one long ongoing conversation… we cover all subjects about anything and everything. By my side, my sisters are with me, in the present moment. This piece is about the rich and sustaining, comfortable constancy of lifelong friends.”

  • Little Shepherdess

    Little Shepherdess

Behold, a little love on earth

“I view this angelic figure as an earthly personification of love. Her gaze and gesture is one of adoration. The smoky blue color of her dress grounds her, as do the two wooly lambs she tends. I wanted her to complement the taller shepherdess figure, Peace on Earth. Together, with the other shepherds and animals, they radiate warmth, love and peaceful attentiveness.”

  • Welcome Here

    Welcome Here

To all who enter, welcome here

“The title of this piece is from one of my favorite old Christmas Carols called “Welcome Here”. It’s a cheerful and inviting song. I wanted the wreath to be a beautiful and intricate cut-metal design that appears to come forward and be presented as a symbol of welcome, home and hospitality. The wreath is dominant, but it’s also lacy and airy — almost musical in the repetition of its pattern. I think the contrast of dark rust against her white dress makes an interesting relief. Welcoming friends and family into our homes at any time of year, and particularly the holidays, is a universal joy. Welcome Here celebrates this tradition.”

  • You’re the Best!

    You're the Best!

Thank you for making a difference

“This piece is all about the apple. I wanted it to symbolize many things … to stand out, be large, delicious, shiny. Obviously, it’s a symbol for teacher appreciation — but the apple is also just a beautiful fruit! A metaphor for good health, for wisdom, for someone chosen for something big … for a special person who always gives the best of her or himself, and makes a difference in the lives of others. I like that this piece is so open — I’ll be interested to read how others interpret it.”

    Irish Charm

May luck and laughter light your days!

“We’ve had lots of requests for a piece that expresses good luck, and this piece is my response. I was inspired by young Celtic dancers, and impressed by the art form; it’s such a unique expression of that culture. Uplifting, so alive, happy….happy-go-lucky!”

  • My Girls

    My Girls

Looking at you, I see wonder, joy, strength

“This piece was directed by the models. The poses that the girls naturally assumed showed their relationship with their dad much better than I could have instructed them. Their father was the anchor — and the girls fluttered around him. I got a sense of how the girls saw him as strong and reassuring. They looked at him with a ‘my dad can do anything’ look. The dad was clearly having fun being with his daughters. I wanted to make this sculpture a two-way piece — the girls look to his strength and stability, and he looks to them as his greatest source of joy. I think the beauty of a good father/daughter relationship is in its duality. I hope the sentiment can be read from either perspective — father to daughters, or daughter to father.”

  • Je t’aime (I love you)

    Je t’aime (I love you)

In any language, it’s you I love

“My daughter lives in France, so I’ve traveled there quite a bit in the last few years. I enjoy the art and architecture, the gorgeous countryside, learning the language… It’s truly a culture of romance. So in sculpting Je t’aime, a piece about love, I wanted it to have a little more style and mystique… a sophistication, an elegance… I made changes to the dress — extending sleeves and neckline. I love the challenge of starting with a solid, opaque, hard surface, and carving and carving until it looks like embellished lace. The extensive surface carving makes Je t’aime unique in the line. Although influenced by France, Je t’aime is a universal piece. The sentiment moves from the universal, to the personal one-on-one. ‘In any language, it’s you I love.'”

  • The Christmas Story Gentle Animals Of The Stable

The Christmas Story Gentle Animals Of The Stable

Susan Lordi sculpted these three animals to specifically fit the larger-scale and presence of The Christmas Story and Sanctuary.

“I wanted these animals to have a calming, yet very stoic, elegant presence — by their gestures, their stance, the turn of their heads. I experimented with color and texture to give them a softness. I was interested in transforming a hard surface by carving and carving into it until it looked wooly or furry, or in the case of the donkey, had the clothlike surface of a blanket.”
